Before there was #TimesUp, there was #MeToo. And before that there was #AskHerMore and #HerForShe. Ask Reese Witherspoon, Eva Longoria and America Ferrera. They've been leading the charge for years now. But was anyone paying attention?

Ferrera has been involved in politics for years. Her activism started at 17 when she was in Real Women Have Curves. She went on to give a moving speech at the Women’s March last year, spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, has spoken up for the Latino/a community, and received The Human Rights Campaign Ally for Equality Award for her work for the LGBTQ community.

Ferrera also bravely revealed that she was sexually harassed when she was 9 years old.

“The common way to look at it is, This thing I do takes away from that thing I do. I think that’s a really negative way to look at it,” Ferrera told Vulture. “I am not just an actor, I am not just a Latina, I’m not just an activist, I’m not just a director, a producer, a creative person. I’m all of these things, and I’ve finally come to a place in my life where not only is it OK for me to feed all of those things, but everything gets better when I do.”

Longoria has also been politically active. She has been involved in immigration issues, was active in Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, spoke at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, created the Latino Victory Project to raise funds for candidates, and gave a powerful speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

“I’m trying to do my part as a citizen. My part as a Hispanic. My part as a woman. As an American. I enjoy it. I think everybody should be civically engaged in a level that will affect policy. That’s the point. That’s how our government is set up,” Longoria previously said.

Witherspoon, meanwhile, has worked hard to create better opportunities for actresses with her production company Hello Sunshine. “Hello Sunshine is deeply committed to creating content that will reach women where they spend time, whether it is at a movie theater, at home or on their mobile device. Women are looking for entertainment that speaks to them about what they value.  Hello Sunshine will make content that entertains, educates, and brings women together,” Witherspoon explained.

Witherspoon also opened up about being sexually assaulted by a director when she was 16.

It's not hard to see why Longoria, Witherspoon and Ferrera are among the approximately 300 women in Hollywood who started Time’s Up, an initiative to fight sexual harassment and assault.

“This is a moment to shine light on other people,” Witherspoon told The New York Times. “This is not the time to be quiet.”

“[It] is a moment of solidarity, not a fashion moment,” Longoria added. “For years, we’ve sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colors and our beautiful faces and our glamour. This time the industry can’t expect us to go up and twirl around. That’s not what this moment is about.”

“We all recognize there’s no such thing [as a silver bullet],” Ferrera explained. But “not taking action is no longer an option.”
