That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for sci-fi cinema! Today it was announced that the scientific thriller Gravity soared high in the box office as the Alfonso Cuaron-directed piece set a new record for an October opening. According to reports, the previous title was held by Paranormal Activity 3, which raked in $52.6 million during its big screen debut. Gravity, however, ascended way above the scary movie by nearly 3 million. Talk about reaching for the stars!

Gravity eclipsed other films like Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, Runner Runner, Prisoners, Rush, Don Jon, Baggage Claim, Insidious Chapter 2, Pulling Strings, and Enough Said, according to Box Office Mojo. But coming in at number one and dominating the cinematic competition over the weekend wasn’t the only thing worth celebrating. According to reports, Gravity marked the biggest opening to date for actors Sandra Bullock, 49, and George Clooney, 52.

Surprised? We can’t say we were totally shocked by the success of Gravity — especially after we saw the chair-gripping sci-fi thriller this weekend — in 3D. From beginning to end we held our breath as we watched the brilliant medical engineer Ryan Stone (Bullock) and her country music-loving companion Matt Kowalski (Clooney) take on the seemingly impossible while adrift in outer space. And it’s safe to say we felt as light-headed as Bullock's character while she was breathing in CO2 after watching this emotionally draining flick.

If you haven’t seen Gravity already, here’s why you should you make it your mission to float over to the nearest movie theater and watch the record-breaking film. (Warning: Article below contains spoilers!)

  1. Sandra Bullock has never looked better. If you think the brown-haired beauty is hot on Earth, just wait until you see this toned vixen floating in space! Wearing just a pair of Spandex shorts and a green tank top, the Oscar-winning actress proves that even time and space can’t alter her fabulous figure.

  2. George Clooney in 3D is everything. We know it goes without saying, but Clooney is a total space-walking fox in Gravity. Now we know that 3D isn’t for everyone — originally we thought that three dimensional would make us sick (it didn’t) — but if you can handle some 3D action, then we highly suggest you see this hunk up close and personal. We promise it’s totally worth it.

  3. After the debut of the sci-fi flick, famous astrophysicist Neil de Crasse Tyson pointed out some “flaws” in the movie, insisting that Gravity might be inaccurate regarding its scientific explanations. If you’re on a quest for the truth, check out Tyson’s movie edits here and see if you can point them out when you see Gravity. We laughed, we cried, and we will never go into space. After watching Gravity, we have a feeling you’ll be as emotionally drained as we were.
