Before Charlie Hunnam was cast as Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey, rumors swirled all over Hollywood about potential actors for the role. One that came up the most? Vampire Diaries actor Ian Somerhalder, who openly talked about his desire to play the leading man. Now Somerhalder is getting candid about his true feelings about being passed over for Hunnam.

"I'm on a TV show that shoots 10 months a year," Somerhalder, 34, told HuffPost Live, seemingly not too upset about the missed opportunity. The actor did say that he was "so unbelievably grateful for all the support and all the cheering and the love" from his fans.

Somerhalder remarked that he was never angry that Hunnam was chosen as the lead in the sure to be racy film. "It's so funny, you read these blogs, 'Ian Somerhalder angry, livid he's not Christian Grey,’ I mean, no, no, no, there's none of that," Nina Dobrev’s ex said.

When asked if he even really wanted the role, Somerhalder said, "that's a whole other conversation." Some think Somerhalder probably just enjoyed having his name in the mix with such stars like Ryan Gosling, Robert Pattinson and Garrett Hedlund. "One can never get bored of people asking about a huge project ... Everyone has to realize every guy in Hollywood is up for this role. It could be anyone — that's how that goes," Somerhalder said about the Fifty Shades movie cast rumors earlier.

Somerhalder had said he was interested to Ryan Seacrest also, but obviously people can change their mind! "Oh goodness! Potentially," Ian revealed when asked if he'd be interested in the part now that the sexy book is getting the big screen treatment. "I absolutely would be up for that ... Absolutely. That would be a pretty incredible thing. And hopefully that could pan out, I think."

Nina and Ian Ian Somerhalder still works with ex Nina Dobrev on the hit CW show.

Luckily for fans, Somerhalder can be seen every week on CW’s hit The Vampire Diaries (returning Oct. 3). Somerhalder plays Damon who is currently in a real relationship with his tortured love, Elena (played by Dobrev). "He got the girl, at a great expense. It's gotta be so strange for this guy. He was so in love with Katherine for so many years, working off the naivety of a 23-year-old man,” Somerhalder said about Damon. "To be in love with this woman who really broke your heart, and then all of a sudden to find a woman who is identical in every way, shape and form, who is 160 years his junior."

Can’t wait to see more steamy Somerhalder, even if he’s not playing Christian Grey.
