Is Idina Menzel's alter ego Adele Dazeem more famous than she is? Thanks to John Travolta's crazy flub at the 2014 Oscars, Taye Diggs' ex is better known than she ever was for her singing career.
Sure, Menzel won the Oscar for "Let It Go" from Frozen. And Jimmy Fallon's version of the Academy-Award winning song was seriously cool. But how much did you know about Adele Dazeem (née Idina Menzel) before John Travolta's stupid pronunciation mistake? Not much, we're assuming.
It turns out Menzel actually had a pretty bad year. So the good/bad publicity could not have come at a better time. In December Menzel and her husband Taye Diggs separated after 10 years of marriage. At the time reports surfaced that Diggs was caught cheating with a number of women.
Menzel and Diggs met working together on the Broadway show Rent in 1995. They later married in 2003. Menzel gave birth to a son Walker in 2009.
“Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs have jointly decided to separate at this time,” reps told People magazine on Dec. 11. “Their primary focus and concern is for their son. We ask that you respect their privacy during this time.”
After allegedly cheating for months, reports went viral that Diggs came home with three women after partying at a nightclub. Before the split, Menzel admitted that they'd had their struggles. "We work at it, I'm not going to glamorize it or glorify it," she said. "We go through tough times like everybody else, but we love each other very much. We try not to be away from each other for more than two weeks at a time, and we try to find new ways to communicate."
Maybe it's karma. But since Menzel and Diggs split, her career has been soaring. She is now preparing for her Broadway show If/Then. Here are five things you probably didn't know about Adele Dazeem (née Idina Menzel).
1. Idina Menzel is one of the few singers to play the same role on Broadway and in a movie.
Menzel first made a name for herself on Broadway playing Maureen Johnson in Rent on Broadway. She later reprised the role in the 2055 movie adaptation.
2. Idina Menzel quit Hebrew school but made extra money performing at Bar Mitzvahs.
Growing up in N.J., Menzel was enrolled in Hebrew school to learn about Jewish holidays. She soon quit, but that didn't stop her from booking gigs to perform at Bar Mitzvahs!
3. Idina Menzel has heard she resembles Lea Michele, who plays her daughter on Glee.
When Menzel's character Shelby Corcoran was introduced on Glee it wasn't immediately clear that she was the biological mother of Rachel (Lea Michele). But in the May 2010 episode "Dream On" the news was revealed. Some fans believe Menzel got the part because of the two actresses' uncanny resemblance.
4. Idina Menzel's Oscar performance has been viewed more than 600,000 times.
5. Idina Menzel's Jimmy Fallon performance has been viewed more than 4.5 million times.
We're not sure who's the most famous: Idina Menzel, Adele Dazeem, John Travolta or Taye Diggs. But any which way Menzel's bad publicity turned out to be good publicity rather quickly. And for that Adele Dazeem is grateful.
