Was Jada Pinkett Smith a drug addict? The actress hinted that she may have suffered from a drug problem and eating disorder in a cryptic Facebook post. In the post, Smith said she has suffered from “many addictions, of several kinds,” but did not reveal what they were specifically.
In the shocking Facebook update, Smith wrote: "What I learned about myself is this, when I was younger I was not a good problem solver, meaning I had a very difficult time with dealing with my problems in life. But today, at 42, I have my wisdom, my heart and my conscience as the only tools to overcome life's inevitable obstacles. I have become a good problem solver with those tools, and I am damn proud.”
Smith is no stranger to addiction, though. She has previously opened up about being raised by her drug-addicted mother and grandmother and living in a neighborhood which was so dangerous that she expected to be dead by 21.
"I grew up in a drug-infested neighborhood where you walk out each day and you just hope that you make it. I came from a war zone," Smith said. "There was a possibility that I wouldn't make it past 21—that was the reality. When I turned 40 (last year) it was a surreal moment because I had never imagined reaching 40."
While her two children, Willow and Jaden, live in pampered luxury and owe their burgeoning entertainment careers to their parents, Smith said she tries to make them realize how fortunate they are because she would be “terrified” to raise them in the environment she grew up in.
"I wish to God I could have had the luxury to sit back and think, 'Mom, I want to go out and get my vocal lessons today because I have this new song that I want to write,' she said. "What I had to think about was, 'Oh man, I wonder what I'm going to eat tonight because there's no food here. How am I going to get to school? And is my mom going to be okay today? Will this be one more day she survives her addiction?' That's the kind of stuff I had to think about at 11."
