Could a feud between Jennette McCurdy and Nickelodeon lead to the cancellation of Sam & Cat? Deadline reported on Monday that behind-the-scenes tension could mean the end of the hit Nickelodeon series.

Ariana Grande stars alongside McCurdy on the series, reprising their characters of Cat Valentine and Sam Puckett from Victorious and iCarly, respectively. On Sam & Cat, the title characters become roommates and start their own baby-sitting business. According to Deadline, an hour-long special of the sitcom from January reached 4.8 million viewers, making it Nick’s highest-rated telecast among kids aged 6-11 in two years.

But despite these high ratings, Sam & Cat has not officially been picked up for Season 2. This is in part because of the drama on-set, where both Ariana Grande and Jennette McCurdy sometimes show up late. Both stars are also reportedly tired of working at the kids network and want to pursue more adult roles.

Ariana Grande Drake Bell claims Ariana Grande did not stop her fans when they threatened Perez Hilton and his son.

Jennette McCurdy’s rumored feud with Nickelodeon intensified over the weekend, when she was a no-show at the network’s Kids Choice Awards. McCurdy was supposed to be there with the rest of the Sam & Cat cast as producer Dan Schneider received a lifetime achievement award. Some felt that this was a sign of a feud between McCurdy and Grande, but the former took to Twitter to explain that the real reason for her absence was her anger at Nickelodeon.

UPDATE: Is This The Real Reason For Jennette McCurdy’s Feud With Nickelodeon?

“I was put in an uncomfortable, compromising, unfair situation (many of you have guessed what it is) and I had to look out for me,” McCurdy wrote. “I chose to not go because sticking up for what is right and what is fair is what my mom taught me is ALWAYS the most important thing. I want to thank those of you who have reached out with kind words of support, McCurdians and Arianators alike. No matter who or what you support, I believe in supporting fairness first.”

Many then wondered if Jennette McCurdy’s feud with Nickelodeon had to do with the actress’ recent racy photo scandal. McCurdy made headlines when nearly-nude pictures of her leaked online. Some believe her ex-boyfriend, NBA player Andre Drummond, released the photos, though Drummond denied his involvement. Regardless, McCurdy later clarified that her beef with Nickelodeon had nothing to do with this scandal.

For the moment, it is still unclear whether this behind-the-scenes feud will lead to the cancellation of Sam & Cat. The network said in a statement that it has not yet decided on the future of the series.

“We are wrapping up what was an unusually long production cycle of Sam & Cat, and everyone is understandably tired,” the network said in a statement. “We are going into our production hiatus next week which will give everyone on the show a much needed rest.”

Still, Nickelodeon has picked up several other live-action sitcoms that could replace Sam & Cat if it does get canceled. While we can’t blame Ariana Grande or Jennette McCurdy from wanting to move on from the kids’ show, it would be disappointing if their hit series ended after just one season.
