Can exes really be friends? We’re not so sure, but Justin Bieber has faith in the future. While promoting his new film Believe and his album Journals, Bieber admitted that the inspiration behind his emotional hit song “All That Matters” was in fact ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez.

The song, which is a pretty steamy love track, is about caring for that one special person in your life. “’All That Matters’ was written when I was in a great place in my relationship,” Bieber told Power 106 about the couple known as Jelena. “At that time she was all that mattered.”

Gomez and Bieber broke up in 2013 and Bieber admitted the well documented split wasn’t easy to go through. “I wrote the best music when my heart was broken,” Bieber said. "[The break up] affected us, especially when we are in front of so many people. It's such a public thing. It's just hard for the both of us.”

Despite the ups and downs of dealing with heartbreak, Bieber can look on the positive side. “It was definitely love,” Bieber said about his relationship with Gomez. The “Heartbreaker” singer also seems to have no hard feelings toward his pop star ex. “But you know, she's a great woman. I love her till this day."

Could they be getting back together? Not at this point. “I think we’re going to be the greatest of friends. Right now we’re taking a little time and not talking.” Bieber said he was good now and “chillin.” He certainly looked good at his Believe premiere last night in Los Angeles donning a bright red suit. Bieber posted a photo to his Instagram account of him with mentor Usher and “All That Matters” video vixen Cailin Russo in a low-cut dress. The move may annoy Gomez, who apparently won’t be seeing the film.

“I’m sure Selena will be tempted to watch Justin’s movie but it would be way too painful for her at this point,” a source told Hollywood Life. “She’s trying to put her focus anywhere but on Justin. She’s not over their breakup so watching his movie would just be torture for her.” And despite Bieber’s encouraging words on the radio, Gomez reportedly will not be returning the favor.

“Selena still loves Justin but she will not be reaching out to him,” a source said. “She’s purposely not talking to him right now because she wants him to see what life is like without her in it. She’s hoping that he will miss her so much that it will force him to finally change.”

Believe comes out on Dec. 25.
