Modesty has never been Kanye West's strong suit, but he took things to a whole new level this week. In an awkward BBC interview that many deemed arrogant and pretentious, the long-term boyfriend of Kim Kardashian referred to himself as the “No. 1 rock star on the planet.” West also alleged that he has achieved greater success than Michael Jackson in some respects.
Speaking with BBC Radio 1 personality Zane Lowe, the reportedly arrogant and pretentious West said that he didn’t understand why he’s struggled to move beyond the music industry, and referred to himself as one of the biggest creative forces on the planet. “I've got to a point that Michael Jackson did not break down. I have reached the glass ceiling, as a creative person, as a celebrity ... and I've been at it for 10 years," he said. "I look around and I say, 'Wait a minute. There's no one around here in that looks like me. And if they are, they're quiet as f**k.’ I shouldn’t be limited to only one place of creativity. I did the Air Yeezy’s and they eBay’d for $90,000, but I didn’t get a call from Nike the next day.”
West also said that rap is the biggest form of music hitting the airwaves right now and, of course, he is at the forefront of it. "We culture. Rap is the new rock 'n' roll,” he boasted. "We the new rock stars and I'm the biggest of all of them. I'm the No. 1 rock star on the planet."
The rapper also briefly touched upon his relationship with Kardashian and made it clear that her success independent from him helped their relationship in the beginning. She gave me everything, She gave me family, she gave me a support system,” West gushed. “She was in a powerful enough situation where she could love me without asking me for money, which is really hard for me to find."
Of course, West has made plenty of comments before that could be construed as arrogant. He told AP in 2008 that he “will go down as the voice of this generation,” and told Details magazine in 2009 that he is “the f*cking end-all, be-all of music.” West also told Slate magazine in 2010 that his only artistic competition is “Michaelangelo and Picasso, you know, the pyramids.” And, of course, he bragged last June to W magazine that, “My ego is my drug. My drug is, ‘I’m better than all you other motherf*ckers. Kiss my a*s!'"
