Kate Middleton's pregnancy style is getting a whole lot sexier this time around, which is sure to anger the Queen all over again. Chastised last year for skirts that were too short and styles that weren't "regal," the Duchess of Cambridge has become a royal rebel of sorts. Not unlike Princess Diana.
Like Prince William's mother, the Duchess of Cambridge is determined to bring a modern sensibility to the red carpet. And even during her second pregnancy that includes flaunting her figure.
In the years before her divorce from Prince Charles, Diana often opted for low-cut necklines, slinky silhouettes and above-the-knee-hems, which no doubt incensed the Queen, too.
Though Diana's jewels and hairstyle don't look modern today, her dresses could easily be worn in 2014. She was ahead of her time, and so is Kate Middleton. But the Queen has no use for fashion-forward frocks.
After canceling a number of public appearances because of severe morning sickness, the Duchess of Cambridge recently stepped out in a lighter-than-air Jenny Packham number at the 50th Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition. Effortlessly gliding over her newfound curves, the ice-blue fabric ushered in a new baby-bump style in the palace.
Last year, Prince William's grandmother complained Middleton's skirts were showing way too much leg. The Duchess was told she should “deploy a couture wardrobe of day dresses with lower hemlines than she has previously favored” on her trip to Australia.
Much like Princess Diana, Middleton has made a name for herself on the red carpet. She's a young mom with a modern sensibility. And she has no interest in looking dowdy.
Her Hollywood counterparts are spending the nine months of pregnancy in sexy, showstopping styles. Why should Middleton be any different?
Take a look at five of the women transforming maternity style in 2014:
1. Kate Middleton
For those who thought the daring blue dress was just a fluke, the Duchess proved again she's more than willing to take risks. Choosing a peek-a-boo, off-the-rack look from Temperley London for the Action on Addiction Autumn Gala in London, Middleton pushed the envelope once again. Whatever the Queen may think of her grandson's wife, one thing is certain: young British girls love her. The Temperley frock sold out in less than 24 hours!
2. Blake Lively
Blake Lively and hubby Ryan Reynolds made their first appearance together after her pregnancy announcement at the Gabrielle's Angel Foundation Hosts Angel Ball in NYC. Wearing a beige Gucci dress with a lower-than-low neckline, Lively was unafraid of making her baby bump the focal point. Clinging to her curves, the sparkly silver piping pointed straight to her growing belly.
3. Milla Jovovich
Regal in a red Donna Karan gown, Milla Jovovich proved pregnant women can rock the red carpet when she hit the amfAR LA Inspiration Gala. With shoulder cutouts and a tasteful slit, the 38-year-old Resident Evil actress was both elegant and edgy.
"We're actually having a girl!" Jovovich told Us Weekly. "We're giving birth to Cinderella, pretty much. [My older daughter is] like, 'We don't need to buy her anything, Mama. She can just wear all of my old clothes. She doesn't need anything!'"
Hubby Wes Anderson is one lucky guy!
4. Molly Sims
Molly Sims wasn't afraid to give us a tiny peek at her midriff at Elle's 21st Annual Women In Hollywood event. Sporting a white crop top and hip-hugging black mermaid skirt, Sims was an absolute vision. In September Sims announced that she and her husband Scott Stuber are expecting their second child. "I absolutely cannot wait to see what life will be like as a mother to a toddler and a newborn," she wrote, "and I really can’t wait to see Brooks as an older brother to Baby #2!"
5. Alicia Keys
In a black satin, off-the-shoulder gown by Givenchy, Alicia Keys looked flawless at the 11th Annual Keep A Child Alive Annual Black Ball. The singer revealed her second pregnancy's December due date on The View in September. "Being a mother has definitely given me more of a fierceness and an understanding of just what I believe in, that much more," she said of her first child with husband and rapper Swizz Beatz.
The glamorous silver straps were custom made by designer Riccardo Tisci and the empire waist flattered her growing baby bump perfectly. Who knew a third trimester could be this fashionable!
