Kim Kardashian is the new Marilyn Monroe, according to Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci, fashion editor Carine Roitfeld and her fiancé Kanye West. So with that trifecta it must be true, right?
In a recent interview with the The Sunday Times, Tisci became the latest person to get on the Kim bandwagon “I met [Kim] as the girlfriend of a good friend,” Tisci said, referring to West. “I just wanted a moment with her to understand — and I fell in love. She's the Marilyn Monroe of our age. People think she’s like a doll, but actually she’s tough and clever.”
Sexy? Maybe. Curvy? Definitely. But tough and clever?
And Tisci isn't the first to compare the reality TV star to the Some Like It Hot actress. In October 2013, the former editor of French Vogue, Carine Roitfeld, told Time Out London: "[Kim] is controversial, but so was Marilyn Monroe and I always like controversial people."
In fact, Roitfeld couldn't stop raving about Kardashian. After her new magazine, CR Fashion Book, did a photo shoot with West's fiancée, Roitfeld said Kardashian was a pleasure. "She was brave. . . with Karl Lagerfeld shooting," Roitfeld said. "She had one guy for hair, one guy for make-up – no extensions or lashes – and for her it must have been like being naked, and she accepted everything."
"She was the easiest model we’ve had," Roitfeld gushed. "And when we put a mask on her face, she didn’t say anything."
Of course, Kanye West agrees. When the rapper stopped by Power 105's Breakfast Club for an interview in November, he compared Kardashian to Marilyn Monroe, insulting Michelle Obama and Kate Upton in the process.
"The [paparazzi] are empowering us over Vanity Fair that want to say that Kate Upton is Marilyn Monroe. Kate Upton ain't Marilyn Monroe, Kim is Marilyn Monroe," he said in the controversial interview.
"Don't nobody care about what Obama wearing. Do you care about Vogue? Do you read that? ... No one is looking at what [Barack Obama] is wearing. Michelle Obama cannot Instagram a [bikini] pic like what my girl Instagrammed the other day." Um, maybe this is why Kim Kardashian doesn't have a Vogue cover yet.
Kanye, Riccardo, Carine - we do not think Kim is the next Marilyn Monroe. And here's why:
1. Has Kim Starred In More Than 25 Films?
Marilyn Monroe wasn't laying on the beach working on her tan. Before she died at 36, Monroe had starred in more than 25 films, many of which received stellar reviews. All About Eve, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The Seven Year Itch are considered timeless classics 60 years later.
2. Is Kim A World-Renowned Model?
Before Marilyn was Marilyn she was Norma Jeane Mortenson, a talented model who easily lit up the camera. It was actually her modeling career that led her to 20th Century Fox.
3. Does Kim Have An In With The Yankees?
Though Kardashian certainly has no issue meeting men, marriages to the New York Yankees Clipper and Death of a Salesman playwright kind of trump relationships with Kris Humphries and Kanye West.
4. Does Kim Have A Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame?
This has been a sore spot for Kim Kardashian lately. In October 2013, Kanye West told Jimmy Kimmel that he thought his fiancée should get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Shortly after West made the statement on Jimmy Kimmel's show, spokeswoman Ana Martinez told the New York Daily News: "We don't have a category for reality stars on the Walk of Fame." Oops!
5. Can Kim Pull Off A Look Like This?
Sure, Kim has pulled off some racy looks. But it takes a unique woman to carry off a pink strapless, gloves, red lipstick and jewels. Can you, Kim?
