At the age of 62, Kirstie Alley might just be looking better than ever. The former Fat Actress has publicly battled with her weight for years and, but seems to be winning that war as her TV Land sitcom Kirstie premieres tonight. Alley will be joined by her former Cheers castmate Rhea Perlman, as well as Michael Richards (a.k.a. Kramer from Seinfeld), and will even get a guest appearance later in the season from good friend John Travolta.
“It was a lot of work this first season, wearing both my producer hat and actor hat,” admitted Alley. “But to me, sitcoms are magical and we have the exact right group. I feel like I’ve lucked out again.”
Kirstie is also slated to have some huge guest stars this season including Travolta, Kristin Chenoweth and Cloris Leachman. “All of us have worked long enough that we know enough of these people,” she said. “We’re getting a lot of big stars who might or might or not do a sitcom. They’re not going to want to do a guest-star role unless it’s something they wouldn’t get to do anyplace else and our writers are great at that.”
The actress will play the role of Madison “Maddie” Banks, a self-centered Broadway diva who comes into contact with a now-adult son she gave up for adoption decades ago (Eric Petersen). And while weight loss certainly wasn’t required for the role, Alley has kept herself in fighting shape for her sitcom return. While promoting her new show on Good Morning America and The View, she showed off new blond locks while wearing a sexy black leather trench with a squared collar.
Alley’s weight loss began in 2011, when she competed on Dancing With the Stars. She has lost over 100 pounds since then and is continuing to win her battle with the bulge, but has also been forced to deny reports that she is suffering from bulimia or had weight loss surgery.
Kirstie premieres tonight with back-to-back episodes on TV Land at 10 p.m./9 p.m. central
