Mariah Carey is returning to ABC for New Years' Eve, one year after her disastrous performance. Is she crazy for trying again?

Carey made headlines last year after she stopped singing during her performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. She claimed during the broadcast that she could not hear the music, a claim her manager reiterated after video of the epic failure went viral.

"The ears are dead," Stella Bulochnikov told EW.com "They’re dead. So she pulls them out of the ear because if the artist keeps them in their ears then all she hears is silence. Once she pulled them off her ear she was hoping to hear her music, but because of the circumstances — there’s noise from Times Square and the music is reverberating from the buildings — all she hears is chaos. She can’t hear her music. It’s a madhouse. At the point, there’s no way to recover."

But while Carey insisted the snafu was the production's fault, rumors soon swirled that Carey had skipped rehearsal prior to her performance. Still, that did not stop New Year’s Rockin’ Eve producers from inviting Carey back to ring in 2018.

"One of the most exciting news stories about New Year’s Eve is giving Mariah Carey that second chance that I think everybody deserves," host Jenny McCarthy told Variety. "The theme this year is ‘Unity.’ I had a moment saying, what do I want my New Year’s Resolution to be, and then I thought about the second chance that we are giving Mariah and I thought that is a really good thing to be an example of on this TV show and carry it forward. I am cheering her on and hoping that she nails it and I think she will."

In fact, Mariah Carey will have a big role on the New Year’s Eve special. According to TMZ, she will perform two songs right before midnight and then be wheeled to the ball so she can count down to 2018 with Ryan Seacrest.

And this time, there will definitely be a sound check. TMZ says the rehearsal is mandatory, and Seacrest is confident the singer will show up.

"Well I haven’t seen her yet this year, but I’ve seen the schedule and there is a rehearsal scheduled, and I’m sure she’ll be there," he told Billboard.

Still, there are reasons to question whether Mariah Carey will be like her old self. After all, this was not the first time she had botched a live performance.  She also famously struggled to hit her notes during the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting in 2014. And she was accused of lip-syncing after seemingly forgetting the words during a jazz festival performance in 2015.
