Mark Wahlberg has been a successful rapper and actor, but now he’s also a high school graduate! Wahlberg dropped out of high school in the ninth grade, but the Ted star has now earned his diploma after taking online courses for the past year. The actor confirmed the news yesterday in a personal blog entry for the Huffington Post, also revealing that he may further his education by studying at USC.
In his blog post, Wahlberg said it was personally important for him to earn his high school diploma. “For almost a year, I've been taking classes and studying any chance I could get - on the set, traveling for work and at home,” he wrote. “It has been both humbling and challenging, but I'm happy to report that I am officially a high school graduate, having received my diploma this summer.”
Wahlberg even admitted that he is considering pursuing his education further by taking college classes. “I would love to go to USC and study film,” he recently said to People magazine. “I don't want to become a veterinarian or anything ... [I want to study] things that further my career and broaden my horizon.”
The Ted actor has also helped others pursue education with his charity work. Wahlberg has partnered with the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens and their Graduate for Más program, which empowers teens to make a personal commitment to graduate from high school. “It shouldn’t take luck for people to be able to access the education they need to help overcome life’s obstacles,” he wrote. “Investment in education is a no-brainer in promoting personal and career growth and supporting economic recovery.”
Before he begins work at USC, Wahlberg will have plenty on his plate with acting. He has already starred in three movies this year and his next film, action war drama Lone Survivor, will hit theaters in January. He is also currently filming Transformers: Age of Extinction, while Ted 2 is in pre-production with filming slated to begin next year.
