Some actors will do just about anything for the art — even if that means skipping a meal of two for the sake of a role. And while we appreciate their dedication to cinema, we have to wonder: Is losing half your body mass really worth it?

The latest Hollywood victim to go through extreme weight loss for a movie is 32-year-old heartthrob Jake Gyllenhaal. Once buff-armed and rosy-cheeked, the entertainer debuted his newly frail physique during the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards held in Beverly Hills, California on Monday, Oct. 21.

Jake Gyllenhaal Do you think Jake Gyllenhaal looks too thin?

Withering away, the doe-eyed actor crept along the red carpet, giving fans a frightening look at what to expect in his latest flick, Nightcrawler. According to reports, Gyllenhaal dropped the weight in order to understand his character, a freelance crime reporter hungry to find the truth about an underground world beneath the bustling city of Los Angeles.

"It takes place in a land where I think there is a desert in a lot of ways — great opulence and, at the same time, great vastness and emptiness,” Gyllenhaal explained, adding that he wanted his character to embody his quench for justice in his physical appearance. Gyllenhaal admitted that he even entered a “mode where I was always a bit hungry."

But Gyllenhaal isn’t the first actor in Tinseltown to pass up carbs for a role — and he certainly won’t be the last. Take a look at these actors who lost a substantial amount of weight for movie roles and left a heavy imprint in our minds:

  1. 1. Matthew McConaughey may have wowed you with his abs in Magic Mike, but shortly after shaking his stuff on stage, the 43-year-old actor lost a shocking amount of body mass for his role in Dallas Buyers Club. Portraying the role of a rodeo cowboy diagnosed with HIV, McConaughey looked near unrecognizable with his sunken cheekbones and feeble frame.

  2. 2. Tom Hanks dropped 50 pounds to play Wilson’s best friend in the movie Cast Away. “All it is, is time and discipline,” the actor who portrayed a man stranded on a deserted island told Time magazine.

  3. 3. Christian Bale’s dramatic weight loss story might be the world of cinemas' most iconic. The six-foot-tall actor, who we knew as the bulky and brave Batman, lost 65 pounds to play the insomniac protagonist of the flick The Machinist. Emaciated to a point where his ribs were all accounted for, Bale explained the his skeletal physique was due to starvation, vitamins, and time at the gym.

  4. 4. 50 Cent’s rippling body was depleted of muscle when he took on the role of a football player battling cancer in the film Things Fall Apart.

  5. 5. Chris Pratt put himself in a new light when the Parks and Recreation actor dropped weight for the flick Guardians of the Galaxy. But unlike the men mentioned above, Pratt turned into a chiseled warrior after ditching his chubbier physique for the action movie.
