The Mindy Project is taking a brief hiatus after a super steamy episode that had viewers on the edge of their seats. Now fans will have to wait until Tuesday, April 1 to see how that highly anticipated kiss plays out. Fans of the show have fallen in love with Kaling's whip smart, pop culture–obsessed, and sometimes ridiculous character. In fact Kaling says people tell her all the time that Mindy Laheeri is their dream BFF.
Who wouldn't want to be friends with a woman who dresses like a piñata and lives her life like a romantic comedy? The show returns Tuesday, April 1, but until then check out five things you never knew about Mindy Kaling to get your fix!
1. Mindy Kaling's First Role Was Ben Affleck
Yes, you read that right! Mindy Kaling's first starring role was her portrayal of Ben Affleck in the hilarious play, Matt & Ben, that she co-wrote with her best friend from college Brenda Withers. The play was named one of Time magazines "Top Ten Theatrical Events Of The Year." One of her first TV roles was on Curb Your Enthusiasm playing Richard Lewis' very emotional assistant. And she made her film debut in The 20 Year Old Virgin with her future Office co-star Steve Carell.
2. Mindy Kaling Is No Ditz
On The Office she played the notoriously ditzy Kelly Kapoor, but in real life Kaling attended an Ivy League school. After graduating from a prestigious private Cambridge high school, Buckingham Browne & Nichols, she attended Dartmouth where she was a member of a comedy troupe and an acapella group. She also created a comic strip, "Badly Drawn Girl," for the school's daily newspaper and wrote for the college's humor newspaper.
3. Mindy Kaling Has Written Some Of The Best Office Episodes
Kaling was just 24 when she was hired as a writer on The Office, and she was the only woman on a staff of eight. Eventually she was working double duty as a full-time member of the cast, and you can thank her for some of the show's funniest and most heartwarming moments. Kaling wrote Jim and Pam's delightful wedding episode, "Niagara," for which she was nominated for an Emmy. And she gave viewers a hilariously out-of-control Michael Scott in "The Dundies," "The Injury," and "Diwali."
4. Mindy Kaling's Mom Was The Inspiration For The Mindy Project
Kaling's later mother, Swati, was an OB-GYN and served as the inspiration for Dr. Mindy Laheeri on The Mindy Project. Kaling says her mom, who was also her closest friend, was stylish with a sharp sense of humor, so she wanted to create a show with a similar character. Sadly, her mom died of pancreatic cancer the same day FOX green-lighted the pilot. “It was like a gift from God or my mom,” says Kaling. “I think she was giving me something so I didn’t have to get crushed under the weight of my grief.”
5. Mindy Kaling Doesn't Mind Giving Fans A Sneak Peek At Upcoming Episodes
"When we come back, we're going to be dealing with the immediate fallout of that kiss," she told E! News. "Right before the kiss, Mindy sent an email to Cliff to try to win him back, so our spring premiere will be dealing with the consequences of bad timing," she continued. "We've also got some great guest stars coming up in the rest of the season: Anna Gunn will be playing a rival doctor from an all-female practice, and Bill Hader will be returning in a super funny episode about a sex tape." One last tidbit the actress can divulge: "Our first two episodes back are titled 'French Me, You Idiot' and 'Indian BBW.' It's just super funny and racy stuff."
