The members of One Direction are each moving on with their solo careers. But they maintain that they will eventually get back together. And Niall Horan thinks Simon Cowell will be involved in any potential reunion.
Horan spoke to Billboard for a cover story this week. And he maintained that he is still close with his former bandmates.
"I see Louis and [his son] little Freddie all the time," Horan said. "He lives around the corner from me [in Los Angeles]." Horan added that he had a gift for Liam Payne's baby boy Bear but hadn't given it to him yet. Horan also planned to see Harry Styles during his recent residency on The Late Late Show.
So it's no surprise that Horan thinks One Direction will someday reunite. He's just not sure exactly when. "When it will be, I don’t know," Horan added. "I prefer not to do it after I’m 40. I’d prefer the next few years."
Niall Horan is not the first 1D member to say that the group is getting back together. The other boys have made similar comments over the past year. Just last week, Liam Payne said he hoped there would be another One Direction album in the future.
"There was an album that wasn’t toured, which I wrote half of!" Payne stated. "I think it deserves its time. But we need to write another album, and do some more tours later on."
But it's still unclear if all five boys would take part in a One Direction reunion. Payne also said last week that Zayn Malik "doesn't really want to" get back together with 1D.
"[He] doesn’t really support the cause [a reunion]. So it’s not like he could be," Payne added. "He feels hurt and scorned in some way that I don’t really understand. That’s down to him."
There is also the question of whether Simon Cowell would be involved in any One Direction reunion. After all, Cowell called out Horan after the singer ditched Cowell's Syco record label for a deal with Universal.
"Niall probably would have had a No.1 single if he'd stayed with me," Cowell said in October. "But you know who does have the top spot this week? James Arthur. I'm pleased he's back with us with a fantastic record. Hashtag loyalty." There were even reports that Cowell had subsequently banned Horan from performing on X Factor, though Cowell said that wasn't true.
Cowell also implied that Payne was disloyal after he similarly left Syco for a solo contract. But Horan still thinks Cowell will play a major role in the eventual One Direction reunion. "We’ll always have mutual respect," Horan told Billboard of Cowell. "When we get back to the band, he’ll be at the forefront again."
