The 2014 Oscars are likely to be very colorful if the Fall 2014 runways were any indication. From scarlet to fuschia, royal blue to grassy green, bold hues were the stars of Fashion Week in February.
It wasn't that surprising to see vibrant shades on the Christian Dior runway. But even minimalists Jil Sander and Alexander Wang dipped their feet in colorful waters. A-list stars got the memo. During award season the last six weeks, top stars have gone bold and bright every chance they got.
In a sea of color, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Lupita Nyong'o, Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock will need to pull out all the stops to win Best Dressed. They should take a look at these seven showstoppers for inspiration.
1. Reese Witherspoon's Eggplant Nina Ricci Gown - Oscars 2007
After separating from her first husband, Ryan Phillippe, in 2006 Reese Witherspoon showed the world she wasn't going to cower in a corner. With a one, two punch she wore two iconic Nina Ricci dresses in a row. The first was a short yellow strapless, the second (pictured above) was an elegant ruffled number. When fans saw Witherspoon that night they knew she'd be fine — with or without a husband.
2. Michelle Williams' Marigold Vera Wang Gown - Oscars 2006
Despite Michelle Williams' tiny frame, the cascading train on her yellow Vera Wang gown could not have been more perfect for the pint-sized star. She and Heath Ledger were still together at the time, and every time he peered at her his eyes were beaming.
3. Nicole Kidman's Scarlet Balenciaga Gown - Oscars 2007
Less than a year after Nicole Kidman married country singer Keith Urban, her happiness was impossible to ignore. Sizzling in a scarlet Balenciaga number, Tom Cruise's ex proved there is life after the Top Gun star.
4. Cate Blanchett's Yellow Valentino Gown - Oscars 2005
Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for The Aviator in 2005, and her pastel Valentino gown was the ideal dress for her acceptance speech.
5. Sandra Bullock's Crimson Vera Wang Gown - Oscars 2011
Occasionally there are huge wow moments on the red carpet. And Sandra Bullock's Vera Wang gown at the 2011 Oscars was definitely one of them.
6. Mila Kunis' Lilac Elie Saab Gown - Oscars 2011
Before Mila Kunis co-starred in the Black Swan she was dismissed as a pretty face with good comedic timing. But during the 2011 award season, Kunis knocked it out of the park on every red carpet — especially with this exquisite lavender number by Elie Saab at the 2011 Oscars.
7. Charlize Theron's Emerald Christian Dior Gown - Oscars 2006
Charlize Theron's voluminous green gown by Christian Dior was widely debated in 2006, but we adored the fact that she took a risk and put everything on the line.
Lupita Nyong'o and Amy Adams have already embraced color on the red carpet. Two of our favorites? Nyong'o's turquoise Gucci gown and Adams' cobalt-blue Antonio Berardi gown.
