Is Peter Capaldi leaving Doctor Who? Capaldi has spent two seasons as the 12th Doctor so far, but he said he might leave the TARDIS for good after Season 10. So why is Capaldi thinking about quitting?
Speaking with The Telegraph, Capaldi opened up about Season 10 potentially being his last season as the Time Lord. Unfortunately, Capaldi seems ready to pursue other projects.
“This could be my final year – it’s terrifying,” Capaldi admitted. “I love Doctor Who but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things.”
“There will come a time when this is over. But I knew that when I started. I was thinking about my regeneration scene from the outset. That’s my terrible melancholic nature. When you accept the job you know there’ll come a day, inevitably, when you’ll be saying goodbye.”
Saying goodbye to Capaldi during Season 10 would be so emotional. But it would also make sense, since David Tennant and Matt Smith both played the Doctor for three seasons.
However, Capaldi’s departure would also mean a lot of change in a short amount of time on Doctor Who since this was Jenna Coleman’s last season as Clara Oswald. She left in order to play Queen Victoria next year.
Luckily, we’ll have at least one more season with Capaldi as the Doctor on Doctor Who. And spoilers and predictions say Season 10 will be as crazy as ever. They’re even bringing in some new writers. “It’s going to be amazing,” Steven Moffatt said.
And, of course, Capaldi is starring in tomorrow night’s Doctor Who Christmas special “The Husbands of River Song,” where, yes, we’ll get to see River Song again! Seeing River will actually be really shocking for the Doctor since this is the first time the 12th Doctor is seeing her.

“It’s River Song, back in the Doctor’s life,” Moffat said. “He probably thought he’d never see her again. So, when she turns up, it’s quite a shock for him. It’s a very pleasant shock for him, because he loves his River.”
