Did Miley Cyrus’ twerking at the MTV Video Music Awards lead to Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s separation? A new report claims the raunchy Thicke/Cyrus duet was a “big test” of the couple’s open marriage.
"He asked her to help him out as a friend and a wife, and defend him and the performance,” a source told Us Weekly. “He begged her to speak out for him and be there for him. She agreed to be the good wife after he begged and pleaded. Then he asked her to stick with him through awards season, and she agreed. She attended the Grammys with him as a favor.”

Indeed, while many criticized Robin Thicke and especially Miley Cyrus after the VMAs, Paula Patton was quick to defend her husband. The actress claimed she knew what was coming and thus was not shocked by the sexy performance.
“Honestly, they rehearsed for three days beforehand, and I don't know how not to dance with someone having their booty in your … all my friends do it like that" she said on Watch What Happens Live. "And, I don't really know what the big deal is."

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton announced their separation on Monday, months after Thicke sang with Cyrus at the VMAs. So while Thicke’s duet with Cyrus likely did not help matters, there were clearly plenty of other issues in this open marriage. And per Us Weekly, the two may have been planning a divorce even before the VMAs.
"It is not a shock to Robin or Paula, and it is something they have discussed for a long time,” a source said.
People also reported that the end of Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s open marriage was the result of a number of factors besides Thicke’s duet with Miley Cyrus. In particular, their busy schedules meant they rarely saw each other.
“They're both at the top of their careers right now, and they're never together,” a source told the magazine. “She's filming in Canada and he's on tour.”
And of course, there are plenty of rumors that Robin Thicke cheated on Paula Patton during their open marriage. Just hours after Thicke twerked with Miley Cyrus at the VMAs, he attended a party with socialite Lana Scolaro. The two posed for a photo together, and a mirror showed Scolaro seemingly groping Thicke’s behind. Scolaro later claimed that she hooked up with the singer that night.
“I don’t think he cared what she [Paula Patton] thought,” Scolaro said. “I was with him the whole night!”
These cheating rumors subsided a bit when a source told Gossip Cop that Scolaro was lying to get attention. But a few months later, the singer was caught getting cozy with a mystery woman at a nightclub.
So it appears Robin Thicke had a somewhat liberal interpretation of an “open marriage.” We have a feeling this played at least some role in his separation from Paula Patton.
