Rooney Mara oozes old Hollywood glamour, but even this red-carpet trendsetter questions her style choices at times. Despite occasional insecurities, the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo actress has completely charmed us in her Downtown Calvin Klein ad for the brand's new fragrance.
The ads chronicle a stunning movie star in between takes, and Mara couldn’t be more perfect for the part. Nevertheless, off camera Mara admitted has a more laid-back style. “My everyday style is quite lazy,” Mara confessed. “I don’t put a lot of effort into it, which is why most of my clothes are black, white and gray. I don’t have to put that much effort into what I wear. I just like it to be simple and comfortable,” the actress explained. And while Mara’s carefree fashion sense definitely works, she said it’s not the case when it comes to her beauty routine.
“I am horrible at putting on makeup,” Mara confessed. She credits her sister, actress Kate Mara, for helping her with her beauty dilemmas — although with an alabaster complexion and classic doe eyes, she needs little help sprucing up her appearance. “[Kate] has tried to help in that department because she is really good at it. But I am still pretty hopeless.”
Another person who has helped shape Mara’s flawless image is her stylist Ryan Hastings, whom the actress bonded with over a shared shyness. “He’s very quiet and thoughtful, and we just instantly got along,” Mara explained. Hastings is the one behind Mara’s famously eerie look, and pushed her to try the slicked hair and dark lipstick look that she soon became known for, catapulting her to style star status.
Yet Mara isn’t all that concerned about her image, preferring to focus on her continuously successful acting career. “I’m not a model, and I don’t want to be,” Mara explained. “I didn’t try to be a style icon. I’m just not that interested in that world. But it does matter, and either I can fight that or I just have to accept that is a part of my job, and I may as well wear things that I like and that represent me.”
