It was the birth announcement heard 'round the world when, back in December, Queen Elizabeth confirmed the rumors that Kate and Wills were expecting their first child. While global media outlets and fans of the royal family immediately went on bump watch, the rest of us knew the real story would be Middleton’s maternity style.
Now, as we enter the final days in the countdown to the birth of the future King or Queen of England, we look back at Middleton’s posh pregnancy and break down her most covetable mommy must-haves.
Being a princess means keeping things buttoned-up and respectable at all times. And as the newest member of the royal family and an expectant mom, no one pulls off prim and polished better than the Duchess of Cambridge.
Jackets, coats and statement toppers were definitely Middleton’s secret weapon, especially during the last trimester of her pregnancy. The conservative coats provided concealment from the prying eyes of paparazzi and added some much-needed structure to her curvy new frame. And though she often favored long-sleeved looks and more covered-up styles, we loved Middleton in the three-quarter sleeves, which felt younger and less serious.
Legs for Days
If there’s one part of her body that Middleton clearly loves, it’s her legs. So we were thrilled that the princess' pregnancy didn’t stop her from flaunting those killer stems whenever possible. Above-the-knee hemlines were de rigueur for Middleton throughout most of her pregnancy, and moms-to-be should take note: Always show off your best assets — whatever they may be — especially as your figure grows and changes. They can be a huge boost to your self-esteem.
Princess Kate has never been one to shy away from color, and things didn't change much when a royal baby was on board. But perhaps in homage to her soon-to-be-born child, Middleton embraced a sea of pastel tones. She showed up for events in pinks, yellows, and, yes, even baby blues. Was the Duchess trying to tell us something about the sex of the future monarch, or is she just enjoying a paler palette that shows off her softer side? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure: She looks great in peach!
Despite lots of conversation (and just a little bit controversy), Middleton refused to give up high heels during her pregnancy. And we say bully for Kate! Though the idea of balancing that extra baby weight on a skinny stiletto may not be for everyone, the Duchess managed to remain graceful and on-point in her signature pumps. If you love the look, but worry about feeling secure and stable as your center of gravity shifts, a sturdy wedge may be a safer option.
Preggers in Print
Middleton may not be the most risqué dresser, but her maternity style definitely had its share of playful prints. Standouts included a floral print Erdem dress that smartly played up the centerline of her body. The style was instantly slimming because the pattern ran vertically on the dress. And she recently stopped traffic in Southampton in a bold Dalmatian print coat. The princess picked up her off-the-rack topper from Hobb’s, a high-street staple in the U.K. Needless to say, the coat sold out in minutes. The take away here? Prints and patterns are a wonderful way to camouflage any bumps and bulges in a chic and stylish manner. They’ll work well during your pregnancy and beyond!
The Duchess of Cambridge certainly has a love affair with hats and fascinators. And no one wears them quite like she does. In fact, she’s worn them dutifully throughout most of her press outings over the last nine months. And although American media outlets may poke fun at some of her more fanciful choices, we know our British counterparts appreciate her knack for accessorizing to the nines. Besides, we can’t think of a better way to pull focus up and off a growing tummy? Fascinating.
So, while we’ll have to be patient as Middleton steps out of the spotlight for maternity leave, at least there’s comfort in knowing we’ll soon get to obsess over her stylish new babe. Cheers!
