The first royal family photo has been released by Kate Middleton and Prince William. The portrait, which shows the new parents posing outdoors with Prince George sleeping peacefully in a white blanket, was taken by the Duchess’ dad.

Middleton looks impossibly chic in the family portrait, with her trademark brunette locks flowing in loose curls. Middleton wore a modest ensemble for the highly anticipated family photo, a fuchsia Seraphine dress that costs only $79. With minimal makeup and an impressive post-baby body, Middleton cradled the royal baby who was swathed in the same G H Hurt and Son Limited shawl that he was photographed in while leaving St. Mary’s Hospital.

Kate Middleton, Prince William and Baby George Kate Middleton and Prince William's baby George was swathed in the same blanket he left St. Mary's hospital in for their first family photo.

While Middleton had a beautiful pregnancy glow, Prince William looked slightly sleepy, although equally at ease, wearing a simple blue checkered shirt and jeans. Although the royal family photo is undoubtedly adorable, the Duke and Duchess’ choice of photographer came as a huge surprise. According to reports, Middleton’s father, Michael, snapped the photo, which was taken at his family home in Bucklebury, England.

“William and Catherine wanted to release photos that are more natural and personable, something more intimate,” a Palace aide revealed. In fact, it is unprecedented in the royal family for an unprofessional photographer to take the first family picture, and Middleton and William’s decision marked another unconventional move for the young royals.

“It seemed perfectly natural to them to pose for a few nice family snapshots which they could then issue,” an aide added. “[The Middleton family home] is just where they feel happy and most comfortable,” the Palace insider said. While Prince William was introduced with a picture shot by famed photographer Lord Snowden, the couple decided Michael Middleton would do, considering the public pandemonium that has surrounded the birth of the royal baby.

Princes Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry Prince William's first official portrait was snapped by Lord Snowden, but his son Prince George was debuted in an amateur family photo taken by Kate Middleton's dad Michael.

“They are a young couple who have just had their first baby and are enjoying time as a family together, but, of course, there has been huge demand from the public to see some official photographs of Prince George,” the aide explained. Now that Middleton and William have debuted their “very good-looking” son to the world, they will likely return to their parenting routine without the worry of lurking paparazzi.

“As a new parent knows, you’re only too happy to show off your new child and, you know, proclaim that he is the best looking or the best everything,” Prince William told CNN. “It’s nice that people want to see George,” the proud parent added.
