Gosling gushed about his girlfriend while accepting the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Award. He noted how Mendes was going through a tough time while he was having fun filming La La Land.
"My lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer," Gosling said. "If she hadn't have taken all that on so that I could have this experience [on 'La La Land'], it would surely be someone else up here other than me today. So sweetheart, thank you." Gosling then dedicated his award to Eva's late brother, Juan Carlos Mendez.
Mendes was sadly not at the Golden Globes this year, as she was at home taking care of their daughters Esmeralda and Amada. But she did subtly reference her boyfriend's speech on Instagram. Next to a photo of Janelle Monae on the red carpet, Mendes wrote, "Obviously this wasn't my favorite moment of the night....But it was definitely my favorite style moment of the night.
Gosling's remarks just confirmed how much he loves and respects his longtime girlfriend. The couple has been together since 2011.
"I’m not like anti-marriage or the institution, like for other people," Mendes told Chelsea Handler back in 2011. "And I love the idea of a union – that’s all very beautiful. But I think, you know, it’s a very old-fashioned, archaic thing. We did it for land originally. How unromantic is that? ... I actually think it's really sexy to be with someone in your fifties and sixties and be like, 'That's my boyfriend.' I think husband and wife is just ... very unsexy."
Gosling similarly told MTV News in 2010, "It depends on the lady. You have to meet somebody that you feel like you can go down that road with. I don’t want to do it arbitrarily to say that I did."
Of course, Gosling and Mendes are a famously private couple. So even if they do get engaged or married, we may not hear about it right away.
