Ryan Gosling's speech about Eva Mendes was amazing! Speaking about his "lady," his two children and her late brother who battled with cancer, the La La Land star gave an unexpectedly moving tribute to his girlfriend. The tribute was that much more surprising because he and Eva Mendes have always been incredibly private about their relationship.
The Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy was a tight race in 2017. With Gosling, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, Jonah Hill and Ryan Reynolds all getting rave reviews, there really wasn’t one clear front-runner. But in the end, it really came down to the two Ryans. And Gosling won.
"This isn't the first time I've been mistaken for Ryan Reynolds," Gosling joked. "It's getting out of hand." He said he should chop the award into three parts for him, Emma Stone, and Damien Chazelle, but they would fight over it. He also thanked his "lady" Eva Mendes for raising his daughter while pregnant and taking care of her brother who had cancer all while Gosling was filming La La Land. He dedicated the Golden Globe to him.
Ryan Gosling killed it as Sebastian Wilder in La La Land. He was totally charming as the jazz pianist and wowed audiences with his musical talents. And it made sense for Gosling to win Best Actor. La La Land was the clear front-runner in many of the other categories like Best Musical or Comedy and Best Actress.
Ryan Reynolds was also a top contender for his work as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in Deadpool. The irreverent, hilarious, profane character was a smash hit. And audiences loved how Deadpool turned the usual superhero movie on its head and gave it a fun, fresh spin.
There were some predictions that Colin Farrell would win the Best Actor Golden Globe at the 2017 Golden Globes, though. He got rave reviews for his work as David in The Lobster. The absurdist dark comedy was about a society where single people are given 45 days to find a partner or be turned into an animal. And critics loved Farrell’s work as the man trying to woo Rachel Weisz’ character.
There were some predictions, too, that Hugh Grant could win the Best Actor Golden Globe for his work as St. Clair Bayfield in Florence Foster Jenkins. St. Clair Bayfield, of course, was Florence Foster Jenkins’ husband and manager. However, they lived in separate homes and he had a mistress because she was scared she’d pass her syphilis on to him. But he always stuck by her side.
Finally, Jonah Hill got great reviews for his work as Efraim Diveroli in the movie War Dogs. War Dogs was about two arms dealers – Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz – who had a U.S. Army contract to supply the Afghan National Army with $300 million worth of munitions. Critics loved that Hill could lighten the mood on such a serious subject.
