Is Selena Gomez angry? If not in real life, the 21-year-old certainly is in her new film Rudderless. Gomez revealed that she was initially drawn to the darker character because she doesn’t get to be that way in her public life.

"I'm just drawn to this kind of stuff," Gomez told E! News about the darker material in her film Rudderless. "There's a sense of freedom that I'm given in the indie world where I can just go and play and be a part of a really great cast. These crews, they really love what they're doing. That's just fun to be able to step into."

"I find myself comfortable in that stuff—I don't know what that says about me," Gomez said. "It's a good contrast to what I am all the time and being on tour and all that life.” Gomez covers the new issue of Seventeen as well and revealed that this year was the first year she truly felt like herself.

Selena Gomez Seventeen Selena Gomez covers the new issue of Seventeen magazine.

“This year is when I really started feeling powerful. I had always been the underdog secretly,” Gomez told the magazine. “I was on Disney when it was Miley [Cyrus], the Jonas Brothers, and Demi [Lovato]. I questioned the way I looked, acted, sang, and wrote. Then I turned 20, went through a really bad breakup, and realized I needed to have ‘Come & Get It’ be amazing. I wanted it all to be me. I’m glad it’s taken me this long to get where I am because now I am ready for it.”

That even includes being ready for love! Gomez has been open about her tough breakup from Justin Bieber (a relationship which may or may not be happening again), but said that she hasn’t found anyone (including Bieber) who accepts her completely.

“I actually talked to Katy Perry about guys who are intimidated by strong girls. I haven’t found someone yet who could understand my lifestyle, support it, love me through it, and not be threatened by it,” Gomez revealed. “It’s hard. I do think I might scare some guys, because I’m like, ‘I want to change the world! I have dreams! What do you want to do?’ But I only know how to be me.” And we love you for it, Selena!
