Is Suicide Squad awful or amazing? It depends on who you ask. Suicide Squad got horrible reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. But the negative reviews upset DC fans so much that they’ve started a petition against the site.

Rotten Tomatoes, of course, aggregates movie reviews. And things do not look good for Suicide Squad. It has just a 36 percent positive rating based on 64 reviews.

So why do critics hate Suicide Squad so much? The general consensus is that the writing and directing are weak and that there isn’t much of a plot. “It chases after the nihilistic swagger of Deadpool and the anarchic whimsy of Guardians of the Galaxy but trips over its own feet,” The New York Times wrote.

They added that the final battle was predictable. “You can safely duck out of the theater and spend a good 20 minutes on the claw machine or Instagram, slipping back in to catch the final song and the sequel-teasing extra scene during the end credits,” A. O. Scott wrote. Though he conceded that superhero movies have a rigid mold to fill.

Many critics also criticized the characters. They wanted to see more moral ambiguity. And there were serious issues with the female characters. BuzzFeed, for example, pointed out how sexualized Harley Quinn was and wished they’d do more with her abusive relationship with the Joker.

But the negative reviews are only making Suicide Squad fans angry. Many fans are loyal to the comics or are huge fans of Will Smith, Jared Leto, Cara Delevingne or Margot Robbie. And they think the bad reviews are unjust.

One fan Abdullah Coldwater from Alexandria, Egypt even put up a Change.org petition to shut Rotten Tomatoes down because of the bad Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice reviews. She said the site posts “unjust Bad Reviews” of the DC Extended Universe movies, which affect “people’s opinion even if it’s a really great [movie].” So far, they have 13,404 signatures.

What’s interesting is that DC comics and Rotten Tomatoes actually have a connection, according to EW. Warner Bros and DC Entertainment are both owned by Time Warner. Warner Bros. sold Rotten Tomatoes to Fandango in February, but they got a minority stake in Fandango during the deal.
