We thought the story of Valeria Lukyanova, aka the Human Barbie, could not get any weirder. But apparently, we were wrong. A new report claims the model is becoming a Breatharian, meaning she plans to stop eating and drinking and wants to survive solely on light and air.
"In recent weeks I have not been hungry at all; I'm hoping it's the final stage before I can subsist on air and light alone,” the Human Barbie told International Business Times.
According to the IB Times article, Breatharians like Valeria Lukyanova believe that food and water are not necessary for survival. Unsurprisingly, this cult is quite controversial. Per the Daily Mail, some followers of Breatharianism have died of starvation.
Valeria Lukyanova made headlines in 2012 for her YouTube videos that showed her resemblance to the famed Barbie dolls. Lukyanova supposedly received plastic surgery to look like a Human Barbie, but some believe she simply used Photoshop to alter her appearance in these videos. Still, Lukyanova has insisted that her looks are real. Even her YouTube videos claim that her doll-like features are simply the result of good genes.
“Many people say bad things about people who want to perfect themselves,” the Human Barbie told V magazine. “It’s hard work, but they dismiss it as something done by surgeons or computer artists. This is how they justify not wanting to strive for self-improvement. It’s how they explain their continued inaction. It’s just an excuse. There are plenty of video clips on the Internet showing what I really look like. Some people even spread rumors about me and retouch my pictures to hurt me. But I don’t take them seriously. I’m even flattered! It’s what success is like. I’m happy I seem unreal to them, it means I’m doing a good job. “

It actually would not surprise us if Valeria Lukyanova decided to subsist on just light and air. After all, the Human Barbie has made similarly bizarre statements before. Last year, she told VICE in a documentary that she was from another planet and can thus communicate with aliens. She also claims to be able to time travel and believes she has had out-of-body experiences.
“My out-of-body experiences began when I was a little girl: I could travel outside of my body to other planets and universes,” the Human Barbie told Daily Beast last summer. “Back then it happened spontaneously and now I can control my trips and travel only when I feel like it. For the last four years, I have been teaching seminars on meditation and out-of-body travel.”
Even more bizarrely, Valeria Lukyanova is not the only woman who wants to look like Barbie. A few months after videos of the Human Barbie went viral, Lukyanova introduced the world to her "twin," Olga “Dominika” Oleynik, who had the same doll-like eyes and tiny waist as Lukyanova.

And the Human Barbie trend is only continuing in 2014. Last month, a story went viral about a woman named Blondie Bennett who takes her Barbie obsession beyond plastic surgery. Bennett actually undergoes hypnotherapy to lower her IQ so she will be “brainless” like the famous doll.
