Life as Vanessa Hudgens isn’t always glitz and glamour. Despite her sultry looks, incredible fashion sense and amazing body, there was one point in time when the 25-year-old actress traded in her couture wardrobe for a frumpy T-shirt and tattered jeans. Yep, we’re talking about Hudgens’ role as Apple, the homeless and pregnant teen in her new movie Gimme Shelter.

Hudgens had to go grunge to correctly depict Agnes “Apple” Bailer in the dramatic flick, which was based on a true story. And to do that the former Disney darling chopped off her long, flowing locks and packed on a few pounds. Sounds like a nightmare, right? Wrong! For Hudgens, gaining weight for the role was extremely rewarding — considering she got to eat all of her favorite foods!

"Oh my gosh, it was the easiest and most amazing thing ever," she told reporters at the film’s Cinema Society and Alice & Olivia screening of the Ron Krauss-directed film. So what did Hudgens chow down on to reach her goal weight? Well, according to the actress, she ate like a Parisian! Délicieux!

"It's not hard to put on weight in France when you're eating all the good French food,” Hudgens quipped, adding that her favorite thing to munch on were croissants. And according to reports, it looks like the red carpet star must have bought the flaky treats by the baker's dozen, considering she was required to pack on an extra ten pounds for the flick. That's no small number for someone of a 5-foot-3 stature.

“I'm so excited and proud of the work I've been doing and let me tell you, you all are going to be SHOCKED with how I look in this movie,” the actress, who filmed Gimme Shelter when she was just 22, teased fans regarding her unrecognizable look. “The walk, the talk … it was a completely new person. I really did look like a boy.”

And fans of the brunette beauty weren’t the only ones who were left in awe of this daring diva’s courage and talent. "We were quite impressed with Vanessa Hudgens,” Roadside co-president Howard Cohen said. “[She] delivered a terrific, and transformative, performance.”

We can’t wait to see Hudgens in Gimme Shelter, which comes out in theaters today.
