The Walking Dead is here to stay! That’s right, fans of the zombie AMC show. Today, Charlie Collier, president of the Walking Dead network, confirmed that Rick, Daryl and the rest of the survivors will be slaying zombies for yet another season.

“We are very happy to make what has to be one of the most anti-climactic renewal announcements ever: The Walking Dead is renewed for a fifth season,” Collier said in a statement. “This is a show that has erased traditional distinctions between cable and broadcast. Its expanding base of passionate fans has grown every season, most recently — and most notably — with the season four premiere earlier this month, which broke viewership records for the series and became the biggest non-sports telecast in cable history. On behalf of the incredible team on both sides of the camera, thank you to the fans and here’s to more Dead.”

In honor of The Walking Dead being renewed for a gore-filled Season 5, we’d like to bring you five fun facts about our favorite, chilling TV series:

  1. Remember the pilot episode of Walking Dead when Rick Grimes beat his first zombie with a baseball bat? Well, the blood that the walker left on his shirt resembles that of a smiley face. Eerie!

  2. Why are the brain-eating creatures called walkers, not zombies? If you’ve watched The Walking Dead since the series premiere, you know that the word zombie has never been used. And there’s a reason for that! According to creator Robert Kirkman, this is because he wanted to bring light to a world where movies such as Night of the Living Dead didn’t exist. That means the Walking Dead characters have no idea what they are taking on and no concept of what zombies are. The outbreak is new and definitely unexpected.

  4. In Season 1 of The Walking Dead we meet the CDC scientist Edwin Jenner who is trying to find the cure of this disease. His character is actually named after Edward Jenner, the English scientist who discovered the smallpox vaccine in the late 18 century.

  5. The Walking Dead has extremely convincing characters! In the second episode of The Walking Dead, a SWAT Team was called in while the AMC were filming a shooting scene with Michael Rooker (Merle Dixon) because neighbors believed he was an actual sniper.

The Walking Dead paid tribute to another amazing AMC series. In two episodes you can see Walking Dead channel their inner Breaking Bad. Daryl carries blue meth during the first season and Glen steals the same Dodger Challenger that Walter White bought his son. Talk about the ultimate hybrid!
