Episode 3 of American Idol Season 13 airs Wednesday night on Fox. But before you watch the 2014 Detroit auditions, check out our preview and spoilers below.

Last week of American Idol Season 13 got off to a strong start. The new producers finally listened to the complaints longtime fans have held for years. Ridiculous/tone deaf auditions were few and far between, and increased successful auditions replaced lengthy sob stories.

American Idol seems like a different series in its 13th season, so it was a bit ironic to see the show return to its roots during the auditions. During last week’s show, the son of Season 1 finalist Nikki McKibbin auditioned for the judges. New judge Harry Connick. Jr felt Tristen Langley’s story was better than his voice, but he still earned a trip to Hollywood.

Briana Oakley is another name to watch from the first week of American Idol Season 13 auditions. Oakley made it to Hollywood last season but was cut before the live shows. But she sounded better than ever on Thursday night, with judge Jennifer Lopez comparing her to Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks.

Other standouts from last week of American Idol Season 13 included David Luning and Jesse Roach. Luning brought a unique style and original song to his audition, leaving the judges to wonder if he fits the Idol mold. He was certainly talented enough to advance to the Hollywood, though it will be interesting to see how he fares when he has to cover other artist’s material. Jesse Roach, meanwhile, used her raspy voice and rocker style to secure her golden ticket.
