Did Casey Affleck deserve to win the Golden Globe for Best Actor? After countless reports of sexual assault allegations, critics are wondering exactly what Ben’s brother did or didn’t do in the years preceding Manchester by the Sea.
During awards season, Casey Affleck has come under increased scrutiny for his past behavior. And he seemed to address the allegations during his speech when he said, “It’s my kids who give me permission to do this because they have the character to keep at bay all the noise that sometimes surrounds people who live publicly.”
Back in 2010, Affleck was accused of harassing two women who worked with him on the fake Joaquin Phoenix documentary I’m Still Herei. He wound up facing two sexual harassment lawsuits.
Affleck also allegedly referred to women as “cows” and talked about his sex life. He even supposedly told White that she should have gotten pregnant already and suggested she get together with a male crew member.
Affleck and Phoenix reportedly had sex with two women in White's room, as well. Affleck also allegedly tried to share a room with her, and when she said no he grabbed her and sent her abusive text messages.
The director of photography, Magdalena Gorka, allegedly faced similar harassment, which she called “the most traumatizing of her career.” She claimed that Affleck and others said she should have sex with the camera assistant.
When the crew stayed at Phoenix and Affleck's apartment one night, Phoenix slept in the living room and gave Gorka his room. But she reportedly woke up with Affleck in bed with her. When she told him to leave he allegedly “left and slammed the door in anger.”
Gorka then quit the film but eventually came back. And when things didn’t get better, she quit again. So Affleck reportedly didn’t give her credit on the film or pay her fairly.
Affleck settled the two cases, and he has only made a few statements about them. He previously told The New York Times, “It was settled to the satisfaction of all. I was hurt and upset – I am sure all were – but I am over it. It was an unfortunate situation – mostly for the innocent bystanders of the families of those involved.”
And more recently, he told Variety, "People say whatever they want. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how you respond. I guess people think if you’re well-known, it’s perfectly fine to say anything you want. I don’t know why that is. But it shouldn’t be, because everybody has families and lives."
Now fans are really upset that Affleck has won the Best Actor Golden Globe. They don’t think Affleck deserved an award after his bad behavior.
There have also been comparisons between Affleck and Nate Parker, who effectively lost any chance of an award for The Birth of a Nation after his own sexual assault allegations came out. Some say Affleck benefits from white privilege and is judged differently than Parker is. However, others say that the two cases shouldn’t be compared to each other – especially since Parker’s case was criminal, and his alleged victim committed suicide.
