White House Correspondents’ Dinner Texting Woman Identified? Who Is Helena Andrews, And Was She On Phone During National Anthem?
When a woman was caught texting during the national anthem at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, people on Twitter freaked out. Many wondered who the woman was, and it now appears she might actually be a reporter named Helena Andrews.
During the playing of the national anthem, CNN — which was airing the event — showed video footage of the crowd. While not everyone was fully paying attention to “The Star-Spangled Banner,” Twitter became obsessed with the footage of one woman apparently texting on her phone. Vine of the moment quickly went viral on Twitter.
Soon, many on social media were calling the woman out, even before she was identified. “Wonder if the Girl Texting @CNN During the NationalAnthem #WHCD was in sync with the Music... Put the Phones Away for the Night ... Smh,” wrote @ 1313Lucy.
Added @GrantCardone,“At #whcd disgusting disrespect for flag and anthem.”
And @SheriMinkoff said,“Disrespectful & incredibly stupid to play on cell during anthem in front of president #WHCD.”
Others decided to joke about this women texting during the national anthem. “She wasn't tweeting. She was typing up her resume because that chick is fired come Monday, ” wrote one user.
Another added: “Maybe she was checking Tinder,” wrote @djdavidjett. “Seems like a good event to push people to the right or left. #WHCD.”
A short time later, a Washington Post reporter named Helena Andrews tweeted that she had been caught on her phone during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. While she did not clarify whether she was doing so during the national anthem, many assumed she was the culprit. And indeed, she does share some physical similarities to the woman in the video. Either way, Andrews defended her actions, insisting she was just trying to take notes.
Apparently someone saw me on TV "texting" during the dinner. FTR I was taking notes. On my phone. Because it's 2015. #WHCD

Still, not everyone was impressed with this explanation. A Twitter user named @HRH_Elle wrote, "I would Google to see who you are but you're just a nobody with no respect for this country or those who serve it." And @luvcats13 added, "Your snarky reference to 'because it's 2015' makes you look worse; doesn't matter what year it is, patriotism still important!" And some who criticized Helena Andrews for allegedly texting during the National Anthem even got blocked on Twitter.
Very classy @reliablesource , @helena_andrews playing on her phone during the national anthem and when called out on it, blocks people
